On Sunday March 19th, 2017 at approximately 2:11 p.m. Fire District #3 was dispatched to 1 JFK Blvd. Apt 3G (Franklin Greens) for the unknown type odor coming from a box.
Chief 27 (Chief Krushinski) arrived and established command, at which time he met with the residents, who had been complaining about a rubbermaid container and the odor making them sick. Squad 27 arrived and investigated with their multi gas meter while on SCBA, locating negative findings.
Hazmat 26 was requested and responded ot the scene. They were able to detect a Chemical Reaction with their meters, which was ultimately found to be a mix of ammonia from a leaking ice pack, with a bottle of bleach. Somerset County Hazmat was requested to the scene and responded as well.
The apartment was cleared and ventilated by County Hazmat and they secured the rubbermaid container. After approximately 2 hours of operational time, all units cleared without incident at 4:55 p.m.
