On Monday January 16th, 2017 at approximately 10:59 p.m. Fire District #3 was dispatched to 82 Hillcrest Avenue, for a reported Stove Fire. A/C Shannon (Car 273) established command and reported smoke showing from the front door. Chief Krushinski (Car 27) quickly arrived moments after, assuming command of the incident, reporting smoke pushing from the front of the building. Simultaneous to this, Chief Calvo (Car 25) arrived and requested a re-tone of Fire District #3, due to the confirmation of a working structure fire. Chief Krushinski requested Somerset Fire (Station 56) to the scene as F.A.S.Team and utlimiately struck the 2nd alarm for the assignment.
Engine 276 and Squad 27 arrived, at which time Two 1 inch and 3/4 hand-lines were placed into service and a supply line was established. Ladder 25, Engine 278 and Air 27 arrived shortly after. Crews worked vigorously attemtping to locate the source of the fire. After a thorough scan with the Thermal Imaging Camera was completed, the seat of the fire was ultimately located in the basement.
Crews were able to gain access through the D side of the structure with one of the attack lines and advance towards the fire. FF Desmond cut a hole from the 1st floor into the basement, allowing access for the 2nd attack line to reach the seat of the fire with a smooth bore nozzle.
After approximately 3 hours of on scene operation, the fire was completely extinguished and overhauled. Mutual Aid units on the scene were New Brunswick Fire Department and Robert Wood Johnson EMS. Mutual Aid units who stood by at Station 27 to cover Fire District #3 were Bound Brook, Elizabeth Avenue and North Brunswick Fire Departments. Great job to all who operated on the scene, confining the fire to the basement!
