On Friday November 11th, 2016 at approximately 12:30 p.m. East Franklin Fire Department’s Engine 278 was enroute to Metuchen Fire Department to standby, while they were at a funeral for one of their fallen members. During this time, the crew was alerted of a Working Structure Fire in Highland Park at 441 Raritan Avenue while listening to radio transmissions broadcasted in the Engine. As this radio transmission was broadcasted, Lt. Daughton along with FF Marshall, FF Salvador and FF Johnson in E-278 without prior knowledge, were stopped directly in front of the address and got directed by Highland Park Police to the fire. Lt. Daughton alerted Chief 100 from HPFD and the crew stretched a 1 and 3/4 inch hand-line into the building. Highland Park’s Engine and Truck arrived quickly along with Chief 100, at which time the crew from E-278 assisted Highland Park with extinguishment of the fire. A 2nd alarm assignment was requested, bringing Edison and New Brunswick FD to the scene. With some good teamwork between the companies, the fire was held without extension to the ventilation system. This goes to show you that you just never know when your training needs to be put to use. The crew of E-278 did a great job, making split second decisions in front of the incident location. Thank you to the members of Station 27 who stood by at the Station while the operation took place.
